Prefab Authoring

Wrapper-first workflow

Gameplay logic belongs on a wrapper prefab, not directly on an imported model. The package supplies model-ready wrappers under:

Demo/PrefabTemplates/Structural
Demo/PrefabTemplates/Furniture
Demo/PrefabTemplates/Devices
Demo/PrefabTemplates/Crew

Each construction wrapper contains the required station components, construction metadata, an initial collider, and a child named Visual Root.

Dress a supplied wrapper

  1. Open the wrapper in Prefab Mode.
  2. Drag the model or model prefab under Visual Root.
  3. Adjust only the model child's local position, rotation, and scale.
  4. Match the visible shape to the intended grid footprint.
  5. Adjust the collider on the wrapper root.
  6. Move the interaction slot to a natural standing or sleeping position.
  7. Save the prefab.

Do not move gameplay components onto the FBX. Keeping art and systems separate makes model replacement safe.

Recreate missing templates

Choose:

Tools > Pixit Games > Space Station Survival > Create Missing Prefab Templates

The builder creates missing wrappers and definitions but preserves existing wrapper prefabs and their visual children.

Create a new placeable

A custom placeable normally needs:

  • StationPlaceable
  • StationGridOccupant
  • a collider for selection
  • StationObjectDefinition
  • ConstructionPieceDefinition
  • an entry in a ConstructionCatalog

Add StationDevice, ResourceProducer, ResourceConsumer, ResourceStorage, WorkerRequirement, or StationInteractionSlot only when the object needs those behaviours.

Object definition versus construction definition

These assets serve different purposes:

Asset Responsibility
StationObjectDefinition Semantic tags, resource rates, capacity, comfort, research, medical and other simulation data
ConstructionPieceDefinition Build icon, category, prefab, piece kind, footprint, rotation, room requirement, and placement offsets

One describes what the placed object means to a room; the other describes how the player constructs it.

Interaction slots

Slots are model-independent poses:

  • Sleep — beds and sleeping objects
  • Work — staffed machines
  • Use — general interactions

The slot stores a target transform and Animator state name. Position and rotate it so the worker root faces and reaches the object correctly. If a slot is accidentally outside the object's room, the worker attempts a mirrored or safe in-room fallback.

Icons and categories

Icons belong to ConstructionPieceDefinition, allowing presentation to change without modifying the prefab. Categories are ConstructionCategoryDefinition assets. The supplied menu builds tabs from the catalog automatically and falls back to text when an icon is missing.
